For the second term of my Motion Design degree, I was assigned an exciting task: creating an engaging explainer video on a topic of my choice. After careful consideration, I decided to focus on the fascinating journey of the Al Rihla, the official FIFA World Cup Ball, exploring its rich history and cutting-edge technology. I was required to incorporate infographics into my animation.
The Al Rihla, crafted by Adidas, represents the epitome of innovation in FIFA World Cup Balls. It embodies the latest advancements in football technology, such as the use of water-based inks and recycled materials. Notably, its design showcases the remarkable SPEEDSHELL, a textured surface covering, along with a meticulously crafted multipanelled structure. With so many fascinating facts to convey, condensing them into a concise timeframe proved to be a considerable challenge.
To complement the subject matter, I opted for a distinctive artistic style that harmoniously blends grunge aesthetics with clean gradients. This approach aimed to capture the essence of Adidas' brand strategies and envision how they might present the video themselves, incorporating their unique visual language.
During the process of bringing my project to life, I storyboarded considering how each scene would flow into the next. One crucial aspect was creating an impactful infographic showcasing the illustrious history of the FIFA World Cup Ball. To ensure the visual quality of the images, I spent time to find high-resolution assets from across the internet, ensuring that they would integrate into my project without compromising its overall quality.
I experimented with backgrounds, ultimately opting for a dark black noise loop. This choice imbued the visuals with a sense of depth and intensity, complementing the overall style of the project. I did this in order to add texture and dimension to my designs, steering away from a overly flat appearance. To achieve this, I incorporated an array of paper textures, allowing the designs to exude a tactile quality that captivated the viewer's attention.
To add onto the 3D style of this project, I employed various effects. Using the built-in lighting effects within After Effects, I crafted lighting setups that added a realistic look to my compositions. To accomplish this and other effects, I turned to a diverse range of informative YouTube tutorials. These tutorials proved invaluable, serving as a valuable resource for the lighting, the ripples, and for the scene showing the speed of the ball.
